Anyways I think you guys should watch/read My Dress Up Darling and here's why

-fundamentally, it's a story about the act of creation and love and fandom. One of the recurring themes is how artists dream of making something that others will fall in love with, and no one should be scorned for doing what they love.

-it has such an accurate representation of cosplay. there's more focus on photography than going to cons, but

-it's legitimately educational! You learn a lot about sewing and photography and crafting. I even picked up a makeup trick from this, actually, with the prominent lower lids being useful for slightly uncanny characters.

-There's an entire arc dedicated to mtf and ftm crossdressing. It's not portrayed as weird or creepy, but rather a hobby that some people just enjoy like anything else. And the manga makes a point of saying that there's literally nothing wrong with it and anyone who shames crossdressers is an asshole.

-It's super affirming of adults in fandom spaces! There's an arc dedicated to an older teen wondering if she should quit her hobby, but then she meets some older members of the community who encourage her and tell her that life doesn't end at 18.

-it's just affirming of fandom as a hobby in general, and says that it's not weird, actually, it's an act of love and community. It's not cringe you're just a hater.

-It's just a massive mood in so many ways. If you've stayed up all night on con crunch with a glue gun, if you've collected figurines of your blorbo, if you've gone to an anime convention with friends, it hits. And overall it really is a story about love and art, and I think more people should watch it.

Cherry Kelly was born in 1961 in England, the eldest child of a wealthy, influential family steeped in tradition and rigid expectations. Cherry (assigned male at birth) was naturally loud, curious, and disruptive, traits her parents dismissed as embarrassing at first but later met with escalating anger. Her fascination with her mother’s makeup, her love of wearing her sister’s clothes, and her refusal to conform were treated as personal affronts to her family’s name.

By her teenage years, Cherry’s defiance was impossible to contain. She flouted the strict rules at her prestigious private school, donning skirts and piercings, skipping classes, and even engaging in acts of vandalism. But the worst clashes were always at home, where her father’s obsession with appearances turned into outright cruelty. He berated her as a freak and a disgrace, hurling slurs in an attempt to shame her into submission. That night, after enduring one final tirade, Cherry waited until the house was silent. In Hell, Cherry initially found the chaos exhilarating, a natural extension of her rebellious spirit. But as she learned more about the rigid hierarchies of overlords and Hell’s elite, her hatred for authority reignited. To Cherry, these figures were no different from the systems of power and oppression she had spent her life fighting against.

It was during one of her fiery rampages through Hell’s streets that she crossed paths with Pixie Dust, who shared her disdain for Hell’s ruling class. (Mementos Mission Manga Scene Spoiler warning)

So while Unapologetically spoiling myself on Persona 5 content, I came across a Manga Spinoff called Mementos Mission. There's a scene where Akira (Protagonist’s name in the Manga canon is Akira Kurusu), teams up with Akechi on an investigation and he's advised to come in disguise and Akira’s version of disguise is “Oh, I just happened to have a female cop uniform in my wardrobe, along with curly hair extensions, lipstick and makeup. I'll wear that.” 

Akechi reacts like most people would, and after recovering from a laughing fit, questions what the heck he's wearing. 

And Akira is so nonchalant about it “You said to come in disguise and this is what I had on hand 🤷‍♀️.” 

The outfit is also available as a DLC costume pack in Persona 5 Dancing In Starlight. 

Point is, Akiren canonically crossdresses and has no issue with it. 

So what if he willingly wears a wedding dress to an Akeshu/ShuAke wedding scenario? 

Originally, the Wedding Dress option was just supposed to be plan B. If for some reason the Metaverse proves to be too dangerous to hold the wedding and they're forced to have it in the real world, Akira could just crossdress as a female and take the role of The Bride. 

Luckily Metaverse Wedding is manageable enough. During the private dressing process the Girls took it upon themselves to play Bridal Boutique for Akiren. 

Fast-forward to the Wedding. Akechi is waiting at the altar, Grim Reaper officiating (it was originally supposed to be Yaldabaoth but Grim showed up and it seemed letting him be a part of the ceremony was the only way not to get K.O.ed by him). Random assortment of shadows sitting in the crowd that the group managed to convince threaten to attend. Sophia is playing the role of the pipe organ, humming a wedding tune. Ryuji is one of Akiren’s best men, Yusuke is busy in the role of Wedding photographer—-um, “Artist”. Since cameras don't work in the Metaverse, Yusuke has to hand photograph the moments by painting them which he is more than enthusiastic about, this man is going to paint the most detailed works of art ever, who needs a silly camera? 

Morgana is on ring bearer duty. unfortunately since Sojiro can't enter the Metaverse, Cop PeePaw Zenkichi Is playing the role of “father that gets to walk Akiren down the aisle” 

Jose is the flower boy. 

Sumire is one of the girls not playing “Bridal Boutique” and is instead one of Akechi's best—-women? She felt bad for him barely having any Bests on his side so she insisted. The rest of Akechi's Bests entourage consists of docile cognitive beings of Sae Niijima, and a couple of his agents. 

Since fashion isn't her area of expertise, Futaba also willingly opted out of playing Wedding Boutique and stood next to Ryuji in Akiren’s Bests line up, along with Lavenza. 

Akechi didn't have anyone close to walk him down the Aisle. Shido was an obvious no go. “Absolutely Mcfucking Never In This Lifetime Or In Hell, Docile Cognitive puppet version or not” - in Akechi's own words. 

So Igor happily decided to fill that void. The long nosed hunchback was an unsettling sight for Akechi but Akiren reassured he's a decent dude. 

The moment comes, doors swing open for the second Groom to reveal—-

Akiren in full wedding dress and veil, hair extensions to further sell the feminine look, along with black lipstick. He's wearing a casual warm smile, absolute zero sense of shame in this man. 

Zenkichi and Ryuji do double takes, Futaba bursts out in a fit of cackles.

Behind Akiren, the girls, minus Futaba and Sumire, stand behind him, all with varying expressions from defeated, embarrassed, and holding in laughter.

“For the record, we didn't force him to wear this. Once we managed to convince him that wearing his Shujin school uniform is not appropriate attire to get married, he suggested a wedding dress. Despite us explaining it's not necessary and a Tuxedo will do just fine, he was already picking out dress options, so we just went along with it.”

“He also pulled black lipstick and curly black hair extensions out of his pocket and ominously claimed “My time has come.” He wouldn't give us an answer as to where he got them from, I can only assume they've been in his pocket all day.” 

Akechi just lets out a defeated sigh, and facepalms. Oh, that's right. His soon to be husband is a fucking dumbass

Senpai Is An Otokonoko Episode 12 Review + Final Thoughts - Who Makoto Wants To Be

The anime ends a little too happy from what I was expecting, but it’s still a nice one regardless! I’m glad that Makoto is able to have closure on the biggest issue of his current life: who he wants to be. I did like his answer!

Meeting his maternal grandfather, Hide-chan, was a big factor for Makoto to find an answer. Hide-chan is just like Makoto, a man who likes crossdressing and cute things. At first, he hid his fondness, but his daughter Mika (Makoto’s mom) caught him one day when she was a teenager coming back from school and seeing crossdressers on her way back. Mika was a girl who loved cute and feminine things; I love the little detail of young Mika basically being a female version of Makoto. However, her fondness for girly things comes to an end when she finds her father styling his hair just like how she did at home. He told her that he always had been envious of her and that’s how Mika stopped being girly and ended up the way she is. She even cut ties with him after her mother died. I get that Mika was born in a time period where gender roles were a lot more conservative and stricter, so it is a bit understandable why she got grossed out by her dad, but that doesn’t mean her actions were right.

Hide-chan is the coolest grandpa ever. He makes all sorts of cute dresses and even makes his meals super cute! He’s really living his best life. However, he’s a bit aloof. Fortunately, he’s not lonely as he’s friends with the makeup artist next door. It was nice seeing grandfather and grandson bonding despite them meeting each other for the first time; heck, Ryuji was even surprised he had a grandfather. I honestly need a side-story for Hide-chan! He’s super sweet despite his aloof demeanor!

While Mika has not been a good mother to Makoto, at least, the biggest fortune in her life has been meeting Makoto’s father, Takahiro. Man, Makoto’s dad is seriously a W father. He never once berates Mika for her behavior, but he always reassures her and tries to give his opinions on the matter. For him, what matters most is that Makoto is happy. I love how he showed the school trip videos he got from Ryuji and  I guess my opinion on Makoto’s mom has increase just a bit when she loosens up when they went shopping together.

In the case of Saki, she and her mom go on a trip together and are having a good time. It’s nice that Saki’s emotional scars over her family issues are healing up a bit, but it doesn’t feel as if they’re fully resolved yet. There’s still the issue of Grandma Aoi’s wariness towards Saki’s mom and that Saki accidentally blurted out that she’d like to go on a trip with both of her parents… It’s too bad that none of Saki’s issues have been truly resolved. It feels a little too open-ended for me.

All in all, I think the finale was very good closure for Makoto as he found his answer on who he wants to be: himself. He’s just Makoto. Gender doesn’t matter for him. He’s him, I think that’s the perfect answer. It just sucks that I have to wait until the movie comes out for him to resolve whatever romantic feelings he has with Saki and if she’ll actually reciprocate them.

Final Thoughts

I came to watching this anime because I liked the premise and was satisfied with what I was watching. I think it did a great job tackling rather sensitive topics like gender identity and sexuality. Makoto struggles with his gender identity while Saki and Ryuji struggle with their sexualities. Not only that, it is a youthful story about teenagers tackling down these walls.

However, I do admit that some topics are handled a bit too flimsily for my liking. For example, the story treated Ryuji so horribly. He’s struggling with his feelings for Makoto and whether he sees himself as gay or not, but all he gets is Makoto asking him out on the pretense that he doesn’t want lose “what’s normal” to him. They get a sort of messy breakup and not Ryuji has to walk on eggshells on whenever Saki and Makoto bring up each other in a topic.

Regarding Saki, her bisexuality doesn’t really get talked about after the first few episodes as she realizes that her feelings are more that she longs for someone special regarding her family issues. Okay, that’s fine, but I’d like it if she’s actually call out her parents about their abandoning her for once. She’s way too accepting of everything around her that it does get a little frustrating.

Other than that, I did like everything else about the anime. The characters are nice, except for the bully who exposed Makoto’s gender because he couldn’t take no for an answer.. The music is nice. The animation does get a little wonky when it switches from regular art to goofy chibi art, but the regular animation is gorgeous in terms of coloring, so I’ll let it slide. The opening song is probably the best this season because it’s just so catchy.

The voice cast was splendid though. Shuichiro Umeda and Akira Sekine are rising stars, but they should be in more projects because they were that good. Umeda was especially good because he has the high tone to sound effeminate. Sekine’s voice is a little higher-pitched than how she voiced Sora Harewataru, but it does fit her character. Having Yuma Uchida voice his second gay boy this season was hilarious, but he did an excellent job with Ryuji. The side cast was good too!

Overall, I think this was a good anime with queer elements. It’s not the perfect story, but it’s still good for what it tells. I just wish the story treated Ryuji better… I might jus buy the manga or read it digitally if it’s available. What are your thoughts on this anime as a whole?

I know muscular hairy dudes are underrepresented in BL and the stereotype is bishies. I’m learning how to draw buff people too but like… can people not word it like ‘finally REALISTIC men not yaoi crap’ whenever they see the former.

It’s the exact same dislike towards men being feminine and rejecting gender roles just hidden under seemingly benign language.

People come in all shapes and sizes and artists are attracted to different looks. Just because a dude is skinny and pretty doesn’t make it ‘unrealistic’ especially considering being masculine and strong is still considered the ideal in society. You might be chronically online and see that beautiful boys are popular in anime and games etc. but you need to understand it’s still not the norm in real life anywhere.

I’m Asian and there’s actually a big pushback against pretty men in Asian media (especially Chinese film industry right now) because plenty of bigots want crossdressers and trans people gone from media and not show ‘sissy’ men to children.

Anyways I’m a petite transmasc with makeup who will never want to look any other way ✌️ if you consider this body type to be automatically more unrealistic and an inappropriate fetish then work on your own insecurities

fyi, dragona is probably actually intended to be a trans woman, as only the unofficial translations use he/him and in japanese she uses feminine personal pronouns. this time it actually is more a case of the translators being transphobic (with how dragona is referred to) than araki. for now :/

i’ve noticed a trend recently where fans of any work that was originally written in a foreign language will see something they don’t like and start saying “well, the original text actually supports my viewpoint and it’s all the fault of bad translation,” whether they actually speak the original language or not. i personally don’t even really agree with the unofficial translation’s decision to use he pronouns for dragona, but can you honestly tell me you don’t think araki would be doing the same? if araki seriously intended to write a trans woman, would he have written jodio introducing her as ���his brother who crossdresses”? do you think he would have introduced the fact that she was trans by having a police officer molest her and then freak out about her being a man? i don’t. i don’t think he’s trying to write a trans woman at all. i also don’t think he’s trying to represent polynesian traditions of third gender. i think he’s just transphobic.

people so often jokingly laud jojo as being the Gayest Manga Ever, but honestly, does anyone really believe this? this is the same araki who, in part 2, wrote an iteration of the “man wears a dress and makeup to trick other men” trope. this is the same araki who in part 5 wrote in two gay men with no discernible traits for the express purpose of having one have a panic attack and die as he watched his boyfriend get brutally dismembered. this is the same araki who in part 6 wrote a trans man being sent to a women’s prison as “a woman who took male hormones.” this is the same araki who in part 7 wrote a predatory gay woman trying to take advantage of a 14 year old girl. araki has continually shown, again and again, that although he loves lgbt fashion and aesthetics and lifting from lgbt artists and designers, he does not actually give a shit about lgbt people as people. if you honest to god think dragona is intended to be good faith representation for trans women that was ruined by evil english translators, i think you are, at best, being willfully naive. araki is not on our side. he never has been, and he never will be. you can dislike the translators’ choices without acting like araki is doing us a favor.

I mean I would argue that the dame culture presented in game is at least comparable to drag, in the way that it's a very performative kind of gender presentation that is completely unrelated to the performers actual gender, but I totally agree that om is clearly presenting the event as something other than cross dressing or the traditional understanding of drag as a man in a dress and it's really nice to see! Its like- gender performance vs performative gender if that makes any sense? Idk lol but it's really nice to see men performing femininity without any shitty jokes

Also it's really funny to me that beel keeps breaking his heels because they absolutely make heels for drag with steel reinforcements so either he's breaking THOSE (wouldn't put it past beel) or they don't have that kind of heel in the devildom lol

No I get that!! I definitely see it as being comparable to drag (which is not a bad thing! Drag is great and allows for a lot of gender expression and there's different kinds of drag) but it also feels different? I think it's because the Devildom doesn't seem to hold any of the gender stereotypes of the human world? Which affects the entire event.

I've spoken about it in my previous posts and in some that are still on queue but;

The dressing up/crossdressing is never treated as anything other than normal. Even when the brothers have problems with it it's never with the actual part of becoming a "dame" - it's things like breaking their heels or being too lazy to put in too much effort.

Being a "Dame" is a character, just like how in drag most people play characters, and a Dame is characterized by "nobility" : the Dames are supposed to be kind, gracious, selfless, poised characters

This is shown in OM! by how Mammon loses his accent whenever he's performing as a "Dame". But there's a lot of intertwining/overlap between acting the part of the Dame and the brothers' everyday gender presentation

Barbatos and Asmo somewhat put an emphasis on show makeup (aka exaggerated makeup) versus everyday makeup, they're both well versed in both kinds

Asmo wears a lot of stereotypically feminine clothes & makeup & heels in everyday life without it affecting how he views himself as a man

Mammon and Lucifer both wear heels often enough that wearing them comes naturally to them

I think there's one card where Mammon's wearing (comparatively) light makeup and honestly I see it as being something that he's used to (you can't blend your eyeshadow as well as Mammon has in his recent card and be new to it, specially for someone who's not naturally artistic)

Mammon says that what he wears doesn't matter as long as he looks like a badass, which feels like it's more than just about this specific situation where he has to act like a Dame - it genuinely just feels like how Mammon as a person would see himself

Lucifer & Barbatos (two of the most serious and badass/dangerous characters in the game) are looked up to as "exceptional dames" despite neither dressing up for the contest. They are viewed as professionals in the area. But I don't see either Barbatos or Lucifer as people who would put on a character that is significantly different from their usual selves (the way Mammon had to)

I think what it comes down to is that drag (for most people) is something that you can at least somewhat take off at the end of the day? Like for Beel, I absolutely cannot see him wearing dresses/heels while out of his Dame character. But Asmo wears makeup/heels/stereotypically feminine clothes, Mammon wears makeup/heels, Lucifer wears heels, Barbatos apparently wears makeup often enough too, in their everyday lives while still all presenting as male that at this point it moves away from being a performance and becomes just a part of them and a part of how they present themselves/their gender. And so, at this point, because makeup/heels/dresses are just things that shouldn't be assigned genders of their own it can't really be considered crossdressing anymore. And in the Devildom no one bats an eye at that.

Does that make sense?

Also, just.... these characters are thousands if not millions of years old - of course they're not gonna stick to gender stereotypes or a specific gender presentation. Objectively, I don't think it's even possible - with the way gender & gender stereotypes change with time - even if you pick one gender and stick to it, what it means to be that gender would change over time when you've lived that long. So at some point you're gonna say "fuck it, I'm doing whatever the fuck makes me comfortable"

You're bi correct? Do you mind, when did you realize you were bisexual? Has it been easy or difficult for you?

i started questioning my sexuality when i hit puberty, around 12 or 13. the thing was that i was a pretty online kid. and i was unfortunately exposed to a lot of fetish content bc of my interest in webcomics (sites like topwebcomics didn't separate adult comics from general audience comics) and that made it really difficult for me to figure out if i was actually attracted to girls or just seeing other girls as sexual objects. the other thing was that i didn't really know you could be bisexual. i knew you could be gay. i read yuri manga and webcomics like "i was kidnapped by lesbian pirates from outer space" and i drew original female characters in lesbian relationships. but my impression of bisexuality came from maureen from rent and whatever was going on in rocky horror picture show. it seemed purely sexual.

i was really frustrated that i was sexually into girls but romantically interested in a boy. it was confusing because i knew i liked this boy, but with my girl friends we'd have sleepovers and we'd sleep in the same bed and i thought about what it would be like if we kissed, and meanwhile i didn't really think about kissing the boy i liked? i designated all of my female friendships as platonic, by the way. the kissing thoughts were just thought experiments, i guess. i tried dating a different boy who asked me out in middle school and it just felt embarrassing and burdensome and the intimate moments we had made me feel unclean. i just thought my feelings for boys and girls should be the same if i was really bi, and they weren't.

i think by high school though i was thinking of myself as bisexual. i didn't really ever have to come out to anyone that i remember. i was the only girl in my class with short hair who didn't wear makeup. some other girls were uncomfortable with me, i knew, especially when we had to change together in p.e. or choir or theater. my haircut was even a point of contention with the directors in one of my extracurriculars because every other girl in the performance had long hair and i ruined the homogeneity. i tried to grow my hair out my sophomore year and even wore contacts and mascara, i couldn't stand it and had it all cut off again before it even reached my halfway down my neck fjhgksfjdg

(as an aside i'm forever grateful that the trans social contagion was only a point on the horizon when i was k-12 bc my crossdressing ass might not have gone unscathed)

but as i touched on before, i really struggled to recognize when i was attracted to other girls. i would draw boys (or male celebs) that i found attractive, and that artistic motivation seemed obvious. meanwhile i had a close friend and i once named a piece after her because some drops of ink spilled on it and reminded me of her moles. we exchanged portraits of each other. yet i was oblivioussss i fumbled her so hard, i was dumb as hell.

it got difficult again when in college i discovered i don't want to look at or interact with dick in any way, and i had to reconcile that feeling and decide if i thought you could be penis-repulsed and bisexual (yes bc all forms of attraction count toward your sexuality)

tl;dr i probably realized when i hit puberty, the inconsistencies in my feelings really bothered me for a long time and the sense that i wasn't like other girls had me feeling alienated on some level, but i had some really strong female friendships and that helped me. the fact that randos can look at me and tell that i'm into other women makes me anxious abt their reactions and it frustrates me when people act like all bi women look straight. being bi is kinda difficult ngl but i am happier w my sexuality now than i've ever been

Silicone hips for my next attempt of crossdressing

My crossdressing happened after I had professional makeup done in a crossdresser shop. The makeup artist knew my fetish from previous visits for waxing and nails, and she encouraged me to go out for drinks at a local cross-dressing restaurant bar. So I did it! I found a table right next to the bar and sat drinking a glass of wine, watching the door to make sure no one I knew came in. I only spoke to the waitress and avoided eye contact with other diners. Most all of my cross-dressing fantasies have been fulfilled thanks to my incredible and sexy wife. I am sure that she will think of another adventure for us to experience together.

After about half an hour an older woman came and introduced herself to me - I have no idea what her name was because I was terrified and in shock. She said she and her husband had been checking on me and asked if I was transitioning with fake boobs. I said “No – but I’m thinking about it” – that seemed easier than a straight “No”. I was so impressed by the genuine acceptance and kindness expressed by this woman that I stopped worrying about the rest of the diners for the rest of my drink and went home in seventh heaven.

It was really unique for me. I haven't had makeup done since, but I have ventured to the mall several times in feminine outfits and will visit the salon where they know me and accept my dressing. Shopping is a huge opportunity to dress up because the salespeople are very happy to help me choose several different outfits. A bra fitting is a great way to get the right fit in the store! I would like to wear crossdresser hips for the next fitting.
